The demulcent effect of the mucilages found in Slippery Elm is most effective when the herb is delivered as a powder mixed with water so it has direct contact with the mucous membranes. This provides a localised anti-inflammatory action in the gastrointestinal tract and a localised barrier against the damaging effects of stomach acid in the oesophagus and stomach. Slippery Elm powder may be mixed with food such as banana and yoghurt, making it very suitable for children.
