Digestive Health
Digestive Health

Digestion refers to the processes of breaking down food, absorption of the nutrients contained within it, and the elimination of the waste by-product. The process of digestion starts with chewing where several enzymes in the saliva begin the initial process of breaking down the food. From here the food is swallowed passing into the stomach where gastric acid starts working on further breaking down the food. The stomach also produces some digestive enzymes that assist in the digestive process. The action of the stomach acid and enzymes produces a gel-like liquid called chyme which is moved into the small intestine where the majority of nutrient absorption takes place. Waste products are eventually passed out of the body via the large intestine.

The process of digestion is a long and complicated procedure and it is extremely common to have poor digestion for a number of reasons. The digestive system is very sensitive to stress and can react with a variety of symptoms which may cause discomfort and less-than-optimal functioning. These might include bloating, gas, heartburn, acid reflux, stomach upsets, belching, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or constipation.

Constipation
Constipation is one of the most common digestive symptoms, and a poor diet is typically the cause. Common causes of constipation are not enough fibre in the diet, lack of physical activity, some medications, milk, irritable bowel syndrome, changes in life or routine such as travel, pregnancy, aging, abuse of laxatives, ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement, dehydration, and physiological problems with the colon or intestinal function. One of the first steps to treating constipation is to include plenty of soluble and insoluble fibre in the diet from fruits, vegetables and grains. Drinking at least 1 ½ to 2 litres of water per day is also important to hydrate the bowel. Herbs that may assist in relieving constipation include Cascara, Psyllium and Slippery Elm

Diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is the rapid movement of faeces through the intestine leading to poor reabsorption of water from the stool as it passes through, leaving it ‘runny’ and unformed. The rapid movement of the bowel’s contents in the early stages of their journey means that nutrients may not have the opportunity to be absorbed properly. Diarrhoea can be caused by a bacterial, viral or parasitic infection or sensitivity to certain foods, excess consumption of fibre, alcohol, laxatives or Vitamin C. The herb Slippery Elm is useful for symptomatic relief of diarrhoea, as is Meadowsweet and Raspberry Leaf.

Bloating & Flatulence
Bloating and flatulence is simply the result of gas in the stomach or bowel. It can be caused by certain foods, food sensitivities or allergies, bowel flora imbalance, irritable bowel syndrome or constipation. For efficient digestion and to avoid fermentation of incompletely broken down food it is important to chew slowly and thoroughly and relax while eating. Herbal carminatives such as Peppermint, Ginger and Capsicum (Cayenne) may help to relieve gas directly, regulating the movements of the bowel and easing colic. Sometimes chewing digestive enzymes such as Papaya before meals, or taking protein digestive aids such as Pepsin in tablet form can greatly improve digestion and alleviate indigestion.
