Hair, Skin & Nails
The health of our hair, skin and nails tends to reflect our overall health and is dependant on many different lifestyle factors. When a person is run down and ‘out of condition’, their hair often becomes lank and lifeless and their skin loses its glow.
Skin
The outer layer of skin, the hair and nails are all made of a tough protein call keratin. The skin is our largest organ and our first line of defence from infection. The skin protects the network of muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and everything else inside our body. The health and appearance of the skin is generally dependent on diet. Skin thrives on a diet high in fresh foods and plenty of water.
Hair
Hair is actually a modified type of skin that has a number of functions. The hair on our head serves primarily as a source of heat insulation, while our eyelashes and eyebrows help to protect our eyes from dust, dirt and sweat. Hair consists mainly of protein, therefore low protein levels in the diet can result in dull, dry hair which eventually falls out. Once adequate levels of protein are provided, the hair will return to its healthy state.
Nails
Nails are a super toughened keratin that function as protection and support for the tip of the fingers and toes and as a tool to enable us to pick up small objects. The health of a person’s skin, hair and nails is often reflective of their body’s vitamin and mineral status. Nail growth in particular can show the history of recent health and physiological imbalances and has been used as a diagnostic tool since ancient times.
There are many nutrients that are essential for healthy looking hair, skin and nails. Vitamin A, Zinc, Vitamin C and Bioflavonoids are vital for the integrity of connective tissue and immune health. Silica has a very positive role to play by strengthening connective tissue and is important for maintaining the integrity of connective tissue. The herb Horsetail is high in Silica and can help to improve the condition and strength of hair, skin and nails. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are vital to the health of hair, skin and nails and are mainly found in Fish Oils and vegetables oils such as flaxseed. Low levels of EFAs can result in dry skin, dry, brittle hair and brittle peeling nails.
