Women's Health
Women have special requirements at different life stages. From young adolescence to teenager, pregnancy and menopause, different growth phases have different nutrient requirements. A range of reproductive symptoms specific to women can be experienced that may require extra support nutritionally. There are also a number of herbs that are useful for supporting the healthy functioning of the female reproductive system.
Presmenstrual Syndrome
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) refers to a group of physical, psychological, and emotional symptoms related to the menstrual cycle. While some women may only suffer one symptom, others can suffer half a dozen or more. PMS occurs in most women 3-7 days before the onset of menstruation, and in more severe cases begin at ovulation, lasting for 14 days. Common physical and emotions symptoms are breast swelling and tenderness, fluid retention, food cravings, fatigue, digestive upsets, constipation or diarrhoea, headache, joint or muscle pain, irritability, mood swings, crying, depression and/or poor concentration. Diet can play a role in exacerbating these symptoms with tea, coffee, chocolate, cola drinks, high sugar diet, alcohol and cigarettes aggravating the condition. Some herbs that are commonly used to relieve PMS are Chaste tree for balancing oestrogen and progesterone levels, Dong Quai, Wild Yam and Asparagus (Shatavari). Supplements such as Vitamin B6, Magnesium, Zinc, Fish Oil and Evening Primrose Oil are also useful for relieving specific PMS symptoms.
Pregnancy
Pre and post natal wellbeing is essential for both woman and men when trying to conceive. When planning a pregnancy, dietary and lifestyle changes for both parents should be considered at least three months prior to conception to ensure that the best possible environment is given to the foetus. Pregnancy is an important time in a woman’s life, with many changes taking place from week to week. The increased need for many nutrients during pregnancy means that it is important to choose nutrient rich foods and supplement with appropriate supplements to make sure you are getting adequate levels of Calcium, Zinc, Magnesium, Folic acid, Vitamin B and C. Throughout pregnancy various symptoms may present themselves that can be relieved with herbal medicine. Ginger, Magnesium and Vitamin B6 help to relieve morning sickness and nausea, Slippery Elm powder is helpful for relieving the discomfort of heartburn and indigestion, while Magnesium and Vitamin B6 are also useful for alleviating fluid retention and leg cramps. Raspberry Leaf is a herb that has traditionally been taken during the last trimester of pregnancy right up until delivery, for its toning effects on the uterine muscle and in helping prepare the uterus for childbirth contractions.
Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is an important part of firming the bond between mother and child and above all gives the baby a great nutritional start to life. No food is better designed for a baby than its own mother’s milk. While breastfeeding the mother needs 50% more nutrients and lots of rest and sleep. It is essential for the mother to eat a healthy balanced diet which includes plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, protein and purified water. If mother’s milk production is not adequate herbs such as Fenugreek, Blessed Thistle and Asparagus (Shatavari) can help to improve the quantity and quality of the milk. When weaning a baby, Sage can help to dry up milk production.
Menopause
Menopause means ‘final menstruation’ and usually begins between the ages of 45 and 55 years old when the ovaries stop their production of oestrogen. This is usually a gradual transition, with periods becoming less frequent and irregular over time. This transition phase may last for anywhere between 6 months and 3 years or more. Some women may not experience any symptoms, whilst others may experience more severe and uncomfortable symptoms.
The most common symptoms include changes in your period, hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, vaginal dryness, painful intercourse, vaginal infections, mood changes, irritability, migraine headaches, urinary incontinence, cystitis, increased risk of osteoporosis, weight gain and/or hair thinning. There are a variety of natural medicines used to help relieve symptoms of menopause. Adequate intake of Calcium and Vitamin D are essential for bones growth and repair and to prevent osteoporosis later in life. Vitamin E can help relieve hot flushes and vaginal dryness and the B Complex Vitamins are excellent for low energy levels. Herbs such as Black Cohosh, Dong Quai, Chaste Tree, Wild Yam, Red Clover and Sage can help relieve the symptoms of menopause.
