Golden seal, often called "the King of mucous membranes" is traditionally used to help soothe the mucous membranes that line the respiratory, digestive and urinary tracts and has been written about from the 16th century when pioneers encountered Native Americans chewing it for their mouth ulcers. Golden seal has anti-inflammatory, astringent and immune supporting properties attributed to the naturally occurring alkaloids hydrastine and berberine. It is most useful when taken at the first sign of respiratory symptoms or colds.
